CHAPTER SEVEN
THE Bellamy College of Technology was a twenty minute
bus journey from the bus stop at the end of Virginia Grove.
Maria discovered this on Tuesday morning as she attended her
interview with the principal. When she had telephoned him on
Monday afternoon and explained the position to him, he had
suggested that she might like to come along and discuss it with
him, and she had been only too glad to agree. But then,
yesterday, she had been still raw from her experiences at the
week-end.
From the moment she arrived back at the villa with Adam
after their swim on Sunday morning she had longed to get away,
and Loren's malicious reactions to everything she did became
unbearable. She had been immensely relieved when Loren took
Adam off on Sunday afternoon to visit some friends and they did
not arrive back until after she had gone to bed.
On Monday morning she had deliberately stayed in bed until
after she heard Alice about, and when Adam came back with
damp hair from the beach she avoided his questioning gaze.
They arrived back in London soon after eleven, and Adam
dropped Maria off first, saying he was driving to the hospital to visit a patient after he had seen Loren home. Thereafter, she did not see him for the rest of the day, and was forced to put on a
show of having enjoyed herself for Mrs. Lacey's benefit.
Her interview with the principal of the college was a success,
and when she tentatively suggested that she might join the
current class he agreed, saying he was certain she would not find it difficult to catch up with what had gone before. She emerged
from the building feeling a surge of confidence, and a lightening of spirits when she realized that as from tomorrow she would be
fully occupied instead of just loafing about.
She walked back to Virginia Grove and told Mrs. Lacey, and
the housekeeper nodded her encouragement. Ìt will be nice for
you, meeting people of your own age,' she commented. `This
house is too dull for someone like you.'
Maria was about to contradict her and then stopped herself.
It was as well if Mrs. Lacey did think she found the house, and
its occupants, dull. That way she would not be expected to spend too much time in it.
The telephone pealed and Mrs. Lacey sighed. Ì'l answer it,'
said Maria quickly, and went to lift the receiver. To her surprise it was David Hallam.
`Hi!' he said. `Remember me?'
Òf course,' Maria smiled. `What do you want?'
`You,' he answered, laughingly. Ì said I'd ring. Did you think
I wouldn't?'
Ì never thought about it,' replied Maria honestly.
David snorted. `Well, that's straight enough,' he said dryly.
'But seriously, what are you doing today?'
`Right now? Helping Mrs. Lacey prepare lunch.'
`How do you fancy coming over to our place this afternoon?
I'm giving a party, and I thought you might like to come along.
I'd pick you up, of course.'
Maria hesitated. Àll right,' she said slowly. `What time?'
After she had arranged a time with David, he rang off, and
she went to find Mrs. Lacey and tell her.
`Does Mr. Adam know, miss?'
`How could he? I didn't know myself until a few minutes ago.
